The Hemi Lounge Chair was conceived in collaboration with Jonas Herman of Herman Studio. With the intention of creating a high-backed lounge chair that was both beautiful and supportive, without the use of upholstery — the clean, architectural expression of the Hemi Lounge was born.
The Hemi Lounge’s sharp profile and materiality draw inspiration from the classic safari chair. The end result is a familiar yet unexpected take on an iconic design, reimagined in an effortless, sculptural profile and crafted with care and environmental impact in mind. A humble, analogue touch is present in the chair’s pared-back design and its clear, easy-to-assemble components reflect an innate honesty.
‘Hemi,’ the Greek word for half, refers to a curved or semicircular structure, and references the semi-circles that emerge throughout the chair’s construction. In a simple yet striking design detail, two semi-circle shapes rise to meet at the front of the chair’s frame and create a spool through which the canvas seat is threaded. Against the fluid curves of the chair’s seat, the solidity of the semi-circular panels imparts the hallmark sense of contrast present in all of ferm LIVING’s collections.
Every detail—from the Hemi Lounge’s construction to the choice of materials—was carefully considered from a sustainability perspective. Designed for easy disassembly, the chair is delivered flat-packed which minimizes the volume of packaging materials and lowers CO2 emissions in the transportation process.
Keeping circularity in focus, the designer Jonas Herman, decided against the use of foam and mixed materials. For the seat, he selected a durable, 100% European linen canvas weave that is ideal for reclining without compromising on responsibility or quality materiality. Similarly, FSC™ certified solid beech wood was a natural choice for the Hemi Lounge, imbuing the chair with a subtle, grounding dimension.
Whether used for reading or lounging, styled alone or placed amongst design objects; the Hemi Lounge is an elegant statement piece that continues to prove that simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.
