Utzon – Can Lis

Ferm Living x Utzon – Can Lis Collection

Drawing upon the life and philosophy of Jørn Utzon, the Ferm Living x Utzon – Can Lis Collection pays homage to an architect whose work transcended conventional boundaries, exploring the relationship between architecture and place. In collaboration with the Utzon Center, a cultural institution dedicated to preserving Utzon’s legacy, the collection highlights a shared vision of transforming architectural principles into contemporary design.

Rooted in the elemental warmth of natural materials, the designs draw deeply from Can Lis, Utzon’s Mallorcan family home. Here, the interplay of stone, wood, and light forms a sanctuary of enduring design. These details help craft a story of meditation, tactility, and quiet sophistication — perfect for contemporary living spaces that seek both function and poetry.

Each piece in the collection tells a narrative of craft and purpose in relation to Utzon’s work. The Vist Dining Chair, built from FSC™-certified Douglas fir, celebrates the understated elegance of on-site joinery and millwork, combining rustic honesty with precise craftsmanship. Similarly, the Aukko Dining Table and Sala Piece translate architectural elements of the home into functional centrepieces.

The Deya Tables, distinguished by their segmented tops and rich glaze-like finish, reinterpret the tiled surfaces of Can Lis’ living spaces. Their bold geometry, softened by rounded edges, mirrors the architect's surprising and playful use of colour and form throughout the site. The Otte Fire Pit, crafted in corten steel with an octagonal form, references Utzon’s fascination with geometric rigour and material transformation. Meanwhile, the Lancet Mirror takes inspiration from the large aperture windows of Can Lis, evoking their dynamic interaction with perspective and framing.

Playful interpretations of Can Lis’ design language emerge in the Opty Boats, made from MDF and FSC™-certified oak, and the Phase Building Blocks, which explore abstraction for both creative play and sculptural expression. The Phase Mobile reinterprets the home’s subtle graphic elements, creating a whimsical interplay of geometric shapes suspended in motion. These pieces extend Utzon’s architectural vision into new domains, bridging form and imagination.

Smaller details in the collection are approached with an almost archaeological perspective, uncovering unexpected forms and references embedded within the site’s architecture. The Newel Modular Candle Holders Set and Muro Vases take cues from the textures of Can Lis’ brick construction, transforming into pragmatic artworks. Meanwhile, the Erena Series’ cloche-like structures tap into the roof’s subtle yet distinct triangulated forms, offering an unconventional approach to tableware.

The Utzon-Can Lis Made-to-Order upholstery fabric, comprised of organic linework and varying pile heights, echoes the rocks and waves surrounding the house. The Vuelo Series, featuring tea towels, cups, and mugs, reference a lesser-known element of Can Lis’ story: Utzon’s bird sketches. Found within his archive, the sketches reflect Utzon’s observation of birds delicately perching on rocks, which inspired the modular configuration of the dwelling.

The Ferm Living x Utzon – Can Lis Collection is not merely a reinterpretation of Utzon’s work but a dialogue with it — an exploration of his dreamer’s spirit, his reverence for nature, and the transformative power of design. It’s a collection that invites you to experience the legacy of Can Lis within your own home, creating spaces that are as functional as they are soulful.
